Bombino

Guitar luminary and Tuareg folk hero Omara "Bombino" Moctar has lived a nomadic life, constantly on the road for his music and throughout the Sahel region of Africa. The pandemic brought an unexpected halt to his travels, allowing him to reconnect with his home in Niamey, Niger. This period of reflection led to his latest album, Sahel, a follow-up to his Grammy-nominated Deran. This new collection is Bombino's most personal, powerful, and politically-minded work to date, reflecting the diverse cultures and people of the Sahel region.

Bombino collaborated with Welsh producer David Wrench (known for his work with David Byrne, Frank Ocean, and others) to create Sahel in a studio in Casablanca. Wrench's meticulous ear and Bombino's effortless yet complex guitar style resulted in a refined and unique album. The ten songs on Sahel explore themes from the plight of the Tuareg to lost love and youthful follies, delivering a powerful musical experience.

Etran De L’Aïr

Etran de L’Aïr, or "stars of the Aïr region," are celebrated for their dynamic performances in Agadez, the capital of Saharan rock. This family band, composed of brothers and cousins, has been a staple of the local wedding circuit for over 25 years. Their hypnotic solos and sun-drenched melodies capture the essence of Agadez guitar music. Formed in 1995 with just one acoustic guitar and a calabash for percussion, Etran has built an audience by playing tirelessly across the region.

DJ Henri

DJ Henri continues his 2024 residency at Sony Hall. Specializing in the music of Mali, Guinea, and the Saharan Maghreb, he has opened for Bombino and numerous other renowned artists like Vieux Farka Toure, Salif Keita, and Fatoumata Diawara. DJ Henri's Radio Africa Online is the longest-running African all-music station online, and his podcast, Radio Africa Online Mixes, enjoys significant traffic annually.

Don't miss this extraordinary night of music at Sony Hall on Friday, June 28.
