Internships

About Afropop Internships:

An internship with Afropop Worldwide will 100 percent not be your average boring and mindless internship. Working with our small but extremely energetic and knowledgeable staff, Afropop interns experience an incredibly wide variety of music and build a valuable catalog of skills, including everything from cultural journalism and radio production, to nonprofit management, cross-cultural communications, Web management, community outreach, social media, marketing and more.

Sure, there will be some copying, mail prepping, filing and archiving. But this is more than balanced by a truly independent role. We believe in giving our interns a broad experience–and with the music of roughly two-thirds of the world to cover, there is plenty of space to take on your own projects.

Although all interns will get a chance to do a variety of tasks, Afropop is looking for applicants to fit within these basic areas:

EDITORIAL

Interns will assist with producing original content (record reviews, blog posts, video playlists, interviews) for our Web magazine, as well as helping to create and format supplementary Web materials to accompany our weekly radio broadcasts. This position also entails working on a variety of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, Tumblr, Mailchimp, etc.) to disseminate Afropop’s content to as wide an audience as possible, as well as to engage with our existing fans.

Writing experience in music and knowledge of African/African diaspora music and culture, as well as prior familiarity with social media, is preferred but not required. Excellent writing, editing and Web research skills are absolutely necessary. Interns should be able to work well with deadlines and be self-starters. Proficiency in WordPress and some HTML familiarity is desired.

DEVELOPMENT

This position is excellent for anyone interested in fundraising and development for a nonprofit organization. The development intern will work closely with our director of fundraising to regularly conduct research and relationship maintenance with potential donors, sponsors and foundations that can help support Afropop Worldwide, research that is vital to the continued growth of our organization. Interns will also work closely with founder and executive producer Sean Barlow, aiding him in scheduling, meeting preparation, outreach.

Interns will learn how to manage our donor database, process incoming donations, draft thank you letters, campaign appeals and letters of inquiry to donors, potential donors, corporations and foundations. The intern will also play a role in events management and grant-writing for the organization.

About YOU: Hard-working, energetic, able to work independently. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Microsoft Office expertise and Internet experience. Able to work at least 15 hours/week. HTML/Web publishing a plus. Language skills a plus (French, Spanish, Portuguese). Must have strong references.

How to Apply: Please send a detailed cover letter (specify why you think you’d be a good fit) and resumé to mukwae@afropop.org
