Most American pop music is in 4/4 time. Much of the roots-based pop music we love best in Africa has a triplet feel--3/4 or 6/8 or 12/8 time, which gives it that extra push and pull and dance intrigue. Guitarists reinforce the rhythm section and make the sound sizzle. We'll showcase salegy from Madagascar, jit and chimurenga from Zimbabwe,
wassoulou from Mali, polihet from the Ivory Coast, music from the gnawa brotherhood of Morocco.
