Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country full of fascinating people and diverse musical cultures. The country is home to over 75 distinct ethnic groups and a proud history of never being colonized. Ethiopians enjoy Amharic azmari music played on traditional instruments such as the krar (lyre) and masenqo (one-string fiddle). There has been a recent emergence of popularity in such genres as rock, pop, and reggae, all which have fused with traditional music forms. Addis Ababa is a prime location to hear and see Ethiopian music at its best. Afropop Worldwide's recent trip to Addis Ababa and the accompanying on-demand streaming offer a look into what's going on in Ethiopian music today.
