Dominican Republic
An Afro-Caribbean nation in the truest sense of the term (80% of Dominican are of mixed European and African descent), the Dominican Republic may be a small country, but it's a country that can be proud of its cultural achievements. National musical genres merengue and bachata have found great international success, while lesser known styles such as palos and perico ripiao still thrive on the island.
Dominicans survived the long and brutal dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who espoused Eurocentricism and banned local practiced such as vodu, the local variant on better known Haitian voudou. Recovering from years of anti-African conditioning, Dominicans have begun to reclaim their heritage. One only has to listen to the sizzling rhythm section on merengue tracks to hear Africa's presence. Explore some of the most influential and interesting artists and styles to come out of the island nation.
