Opening Night FELA! Party

Those lucky enough to see FELA! open on Broadway last night knew we were witnessing history. On stage--the powerful evocation of the one and only Fela, Antibalas on stage soulfully performing classic Fela anthems like “Zombie,” the gorgeously choreographed ensemble. And we were rallied to chant "yeah, yeah!" by Fela, stand up and dance, and sing along. There was a tremendous sense of elation in the Eugene O'Neil Theater. As the NY Times said in its rave review, there has never been anything like it on Broadway. This is truly a pivotal moment for African culture in such a mainstream entertainment context. Of course, the jury is out on whether enough of the mainstream public supports FELA! but my gut feeling is it that it will. It’s certainly worth a trip to New York City to see. Tell your friends. Word of mouth is the best way to get the word out. (We will be offering discounts on FELA! tickets through afropop.org soon.)
See Banning’s blog for a more extensive review of opening night for FELA!
The after party was a blast. Great vibe. Good food. Festive dress. And dancing to...Fela of course! Here are some of my snapshots.
