MAY

African Film Festival New York
May 13th, 15th, 16th, 28th-31st
Walter Reade Theater, Columbia University, Creative Time,
New Museum, BAMCINEMATEK

The 2010 New York African Film Festival, presented under the banner “Independent Africa,” spotlights 17 African nations, as they observe 50 years of independence from colonial rule. These nations include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia and Togo. Complementing the theme of independence, the festival incorporates rare archival footage of African nations as they transitioned from colonial rule, alongside independently produced classic and contemporary African cinema, to bring into full view a strong visual narrative, which chronicles the changes throughout the continent, over a 50-year period. Rounding off the festival are films that highlight the World Cup in South Africa!

African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) is a New York non-profit 501(c)(3) arts organization. The organization, established in 1990, began as an ad hoc committee of African and American artists and scholars.

Carlos Varela
May 13
S.O.B's
9:00pm

The Cuban-born singer-songwriter Carlos Varela started composing in 1978 and subsequently joined the Nueva Trova musical movement, in the 1980`s. His first CD “Jalisco Park” was published in Spain. Often referred to as the 'Cuban Bob Dylan'. Varela graduated from the Cuban Art Institute ISA with an acting degree. He recorded his first album, Jalisco Park, in 1989, which was followed by a live record called Carlos Varela en Vivo in 1991 and Monedas Al Aire in 1992. Two years later, after issuing Como Los Peces, a contemporary folk record that straddled both catchy songs and nostalgic ballads, the talented artist debuted on MTV Latino with "Robinson." He had the opportunity to perform live in the U.S. in 1998 when he played a festival called Songwriters in the Round in Miami.

One of Varela’s songs — “Una Palabra” (A Word)— was used in the film Powder Keg (2001) directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu and in the film Man on Fire in 2004. Come and see one of Cuba's sons at New York's SOBs on May 14th.

Havana Nights
Every 2nd Saturday of the month
@S.O.B.’s
12AM

Havana Nights returns for its second installment. Taste the forbidden fruit and come to SOBs ' Havana Nights’, the hottest new series from the founders of Salsa Groove & Bossa Nova Brunch.  For years SOBs attendees have been asking for a Saturday night of heat…and the wait is finally over.

Every 2nd Saturday of the month, SOBs is opening its doors after midnight for a sizzling Cuban dance party, in the style of the world-famous Havana clubs like The Tropicana & Diablo TunTun until well into the morning hours. In the vein of these great clubs, the music played will be Timba, the contemporary dance music of , similar to salsa with a little more heat. The style contains elements of son, mixed with rock, funk & reggae. Additionally timba is sensual and easy to learn especially with the Havana Dancers showing the steps. Every Havana Night party will feature a live band and the highlights of the series promise to be the music and dance.

has long represented the forbidden fruit of the Caribbean & Latin America. SOBs is giving NYC the chance to experience the culture and sizzling flavor of the isle. All night your friendly bartenders will be serving drink specials of Libre, Mojitos & Daiquiris. As if that weren’t enough the kitchen will be open providing Latin Fusion cuisine with some Cuban specials thrown in the mix.

Havana Nights is the perfect place for couples to come dance, drink and eat. For singles there will be plenty of unattached dancers; the professional Cuban dance troupe members will get even the shyest person on the dance floor after their demonstrations. Cuban timba is distinct and known for its vigorous moves and flavor everyone is invited and encouraged to take part in. The Home of Universal Music is bringing the heat and spice of Havana to NYC; call it Salsa Picante.
