NOVEMBER
South American Women Music Series Drom Friday, November 14, 2008 8:00 PM

$12 General Admission
Sofia Tosello, a remarkable young singer hailing from Cordoba, Argentina, belongs to an exciting new group of South American artists who, by blending the traditional rhythms of their respective countries with a funky and sophisticated New York sensibility, are challenging the way Latin American song is done.
Andrea Tierra, singer-songwriter from Medellin, Colombia, is the result of the innovative mix of popular Latin-American rhythms with jazz, flamenco and the essence of her own poems which she brings to life on all her performances. Her songs are progressive and are often politicized against world injustice

Amanda Diva, Che Grand and Blitz the Ambassador The Knitting Factory Wednesday, November 19, 2008 8:00 PM

On Wednesday, November 19th, Move Forward Music presents a night of live hip-hop with fast-rising independent stars Blitz the Ambassador, Amanda Diva and Che Grand. In a bill that not only showcases some of the hottest rap talents to come out of New York this decade, the concert will also highlight a musical progression in hip-hop, as the 3 featured acts all perform backed by live bands. In fact, aside from an opening DJ set to warm up the crowd, there will be no records played on November 19th. Horns will blow. Drums will bang. Mics will be rocked!
Brooklyn rapper Blitz the Ambassador grew up in Ghana and is using the mic to bridge the social gap between America and the rest of the world. Politically conscious with the skills and work ethic to match, Blitz performs with a 14-piece band that includes a complete horn section, a violin, cello and upright bass. This year has been an impressive one for Blitz the Ambassador, performing alongside legends like KRS-ONE, Slick Rick and Public Enemy, while rocking stages from Juneau, Alaska to Celebrate Brooklyn! in Prospect Park.
The stunning spoken word poet turned hip-hop singer, Amanda Diva, who was recently selected to be featured at the SWSX music conference in Austin, TX in March 2009, broke into the music industry as a VJ on MTV2 and host of “Breakfast at Diva’s” on Sirius Satellite radio. In December, she released the Life Experience, the first in a trilogy of EPs, which included viral hits like “Windows over Harlem” and “40 Emcees”, featuring Q-Tip. The talented Columbia University grad was praised by critics and fans alike and Diva proved her performance chops when she moved the sold-out crowd at SOB’s in March.
As hip-hop with live instrumentation becomes more prominent and acts like Lupe Fiasco, Ghostface Killah and Kanye West tour with live bands, it is important to highlight the young artists who are writing songs with musicians and including their band in the creative process.
When: Wednesday, November 19th at 9pm
Where: Knitting Factory, 74 Leonard Street. New York, NY 10013
Ticket Info: $12 in Advance/$15 Day of Show |

Alex Cuba Joe's Pub Wednesday, November 26, 2008 9:00 PM

Singer-songwriter Alex Cuba hails from Artemisa, Cuba (40 miles from Havana) and resides in Smithers, B.C. (14 hours north of Vancouver). Musically, he lives everywhere in between. His trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex' 2nd album "Agua del Pozo" (Water From The Well), nominated for "Best World Music Album" at Canada's Juno Awards, represents a critically-acclaimed progression from his Juno-winning debut "Humo de Tabaco". Not tied to tradition, this Cuban-Canadian prefers his vintage '62 Gibson over el sencerro (cowbell) anytime.

THE MANDINGO AMBASSADORS BARBES EVERY WEDNESDAY @10pm
This legendary band was originally formed in Guinea, West Africa, in the late 1960’s by Guitarist Mamady “Djelike” Kouyate and singer Emile Soumah. Their music became some of the most beloved and influential of their generation and their songs were widely imitated. Mamady later went on to perform for many years with Guinea’s most popular group, Bembeya Jazz National. Now based in New York, Mamady Kouyate has decided to revive The Ambassadors. His electrifying guitar-work is supported by the new Mandingo Ambassadors, a crew of Guinean and American musicians who have steeped their glorious sound in classic 60's guinean mandingo music.
