| Oumou Sangare |
| Wednesday, July 7, Doors: 7 pm Show: 9 pm |
In 1990, Wassoulou singer Sangare became a superstar in West Africa with Moussolou. She received much of her attention for writing and singing lyrics that specifically addressed concerns of women in modern West African society, such as the conflict between marriage and personal freedom, a pioneering concept for the popular music of the region. Western listeners who can't understand the lyrics will be drawn in by her mellifluous vocals and smooth, circular compositions, which use full arrangements without sounding over-produced.

Youssou N'Dour and the Super Étoile
The Great African Ball |
| Friday, July 9th from 10:30 PM until dawn! |
The Great African Ball is Youssou's annual Senegalese-styled, all night concert/party. In these concerts celebrating African life and community in NYC, Youssou goes back to his roots, demonstrating the energy of mbalax and the power of his singing that catapulted him to fame nearly 25 years ago. With the release of Youssou's new album, Egypt , by Nonesuch on June 8, just a month before the return of the Ball, the interplay of sacred and profane in his music - always present at some level - will perhaps be drawn into a sharper focus for those who are really familiar with Youssou's oeuvre. Listen to Egypt cd sample tracks at Amazon.com.
TICKET PRICE: $50 in advance, $60 day of show. Buy tickets from Ticketmaster online HERE or by phone (212) 307-7171. For more information call (212) 673-2229 or visit "Great African Ball" website.
