Mali Around the World

The heart of this program are live field recordings from the 2004 Festival in the Desert in Essakane, Mali, made by our colleague Mike Gubman. There are also live recordings we made at the 2003 Smithsonian Folkways Festival in Washington, DC, which featured Mali that year. But there's also lots of great music you can find and buy here. Such is the wealth of Malian music these days. All of these titles are highly recommended.
Here are a list of albums heard on Afropop Worldwide's Mali Around the World:
Salif Keita "Remixes From Moffou"
(Decca 2004) Lobi Traoré "Mali Blue"
(Modiba/World Village 2004) Tinariwen "Amassakoul"
(Modiba/World Village 2004) Oumou Sangaré "Oumou"
(Nonesuch Rec. 2004) Rokia Traoré "Bowmboï"
(Indigo 2003, Nonesuch 2004) Keketigui Diabate "Sandiya"
(Contre Jour 2004) Mamadou Diabaté "Behmanka"
Behmanka is among the most beautiful and technically awesome kora recordings ever made. From its stately opener "Touma," which revisits the title track from Mamadou's ensemble debut album, to the lashing, 12/8 lope of the exhilarating closer, "Djimba (Modiba/World Village 2005) Neba Solo "Neba Solo"
(Mali K7 2002) Habib Koité "Fôly! Live Around The World"
(Modiba/World Village 2003, Contre Jour 2003)
