Wazimbo
Born: 1948, Chibuto, Gaza, Mozambique

Started singing in the 1960s, first with Silverstars band, and then the Geizers. He toured Lusophone countries, mixing international sounds and Brazilian music. When independence came in 1974, Wazimbo was the only singer employed by state radio. He went on to perform and make classic recordings with Marrabenta Star Orchestra, notably their 1988 Harare, Zimbabwe, recording. Since that band dissolved in the 1990s, Wazimbo has had a solo career. His trademark song, the beautiful ballad "Nwahulwana" has appeared in various versions, and was even used in the soundtrack to the Jack Nicholson film "The Pledge," directed by Sean Penn. The words mean "You are a night bird, moving after dark from bar to bar..."
