Abdel Halim Hafez
Born: 1927, Egypt
Died: 1977
Singer and film star Abdel Halim Hafez is one of the most beloved figures in Egyptian 20th century culture. He took to the stage in his twenties, lending his voice to President Abdel Nasser's 1952 nationalist revolution and earning the epithet "Nightingale of the Nile." Working with Abdel Wahab though, he went on to extend his light, pop-oriented songs into long form neo-classical works in Oum Kalsoum's distinguished tradition. Years after their deaths, these three musicians still outsell all their contemporary competitors.
