Mohamed Mounir
Born: Unknown, Egypt
The top singer from a 1970s wave of Nubian migration, Mohamed Mounir sings with a powerful, plaintive voice. He presents himself as an Egyptian, intent on reaching beyond the Nubian communities. Mounir came from Aswan and knows Nubian tradition, but he tempers his roots with international pop flavor, and courts the young intellectuals in Cairo's al jeel pop scene, addressing broad social and political themes such as the Arab-Israeli conflict.
