Koppo
Born: 1976, Cameroon

Koppo, born Patrice Minko'o, began studying music in school and then majored in theatre at the University of Yaoundé. His first major performance was in 2003 at the Fête de la Musique in Cameroon's capitol. He still works as an actor, appearing on television and in theatre productions. But his main focus has shifted to music in a big way.
Koppo has been a favorite of young Cameroon since his 2004 hit, "Je go," off the album of the same name (BB Prod). A large part of his success comes from his decision to sing and rap in Camfranglais--a language nearly unintelligible to older Cameroonians. Camfranglais is a blend of English, French, and indigenous Cameroonian languages. For young Cameroonians trying to reconcile their disparate identities--Anglophone, Francophone, and tribal--Camfranglais is a unifying language. Plus, it's super cool.
