Bhekumuzi Luthuli
Born: Unknown, South Africa

r/> Bhekumuzi Luthuli began playing music as a child, learning traditional African music on a tin guitar. He is renowned for his work within the Maskanda style, where he is seen as one of the top vocalists/lyricists. In the early 1980s, he joined the mbaqanga band Oshimi, based in Durban. Bhekumuzi recorded two albums with the group before setting off on his solo career.

His second and third solo releases, Unembeza and Wongikhonzela Enhlizlyweni, won him prestigious OKTV awards, and he has since released over seventeen albums. His album Impempe reached platinum status, selling over 50,000 copies.

Bhekumuzi tells stories through his music. He comments, “My music is basically about what I see in the society—personal experience. Sometimes I use music to warn people about things that would happen in the futureÉWhen I tell a story using music I try to put some comic elements so that people will enjoy the song. I use my creativity to come up with something that will be educative and entertaining at the same time.”

Bhekumuzi doesn't have as much variation in his playing as other Maskanda artists, but he is loved for his poetics and his very clever lyrics.
