Perhaps the only full-length CD of takamba music from the Sahara Desert. Takamba is a dance and music style of the Songhai people, centered in Gao, Mali. As practiced today, the all-important dance is slow and sensuous with a graceful intensity that reflects the pace and character of life in the Sahara Desert. The music, as performed by these seasoned practitioners, is a cracking tumble of sharp, polyrhythmic calabash percussion, jangling, semi-distored spike lute (ngoni or kurubu). Mesmerizing!
