Asnaqètch Wèrqu
Éthiopiques 16: Asnaqètch Wèrqu
Buda Musique,
The krar, an ancient, folkloric Ethiopan lyre, is the companion of the lonely and loveless. Asnaqètch Wèrqu made her name as one of the country’s first screen actresses in the 1950s. Then for 30 years she won people’s lasting respect and affection for her “poignant laments” and “sarcastic ditties.” Her krar has a thin, brittle sound—somewhere between an old, dull-toned banjo and a Japanese koto—and her clear voice flutters and moans though 22 short tracks recorded in the mid-70s. The best of them have the seductive allure of old country blues or dark, Celtic ballads.
