“Small Island, Big Song” is an award-winning multimedia presentation featuring over 100 artists (eight of whom will perform live) from a collective of island nations of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The event combines music, spoken word, and live cinema with footage collected during a 3-year film trip across 16 countries, guided by the artists in their homelands. The ambitious project explores the cultural connections between the seafaring descendants of islands that are on the frontline of cultural and environmental challenges. These artists are honoring their legacies and preserving the voice of their people by performing in their native languages and playing traditional instruments. Billboard describes the event as “one coherent jaw dropping piece” and Music critic Tom Orr writes in RootsWorld “….sound like one very big, very happy family doing what they do best while helping get the word out on a most serious issue.”
Performers include Sauljaljui of Taiwan, Emlyn of Mauritius, Putad of Taiwan, climate activist Selina Leem of the Marshall Islands, Sammy of Madagascar, Kokol of Mauritius, Richard Mogu of Papua New Guinea, and Kan on Mauritius.
The ORIGINS series features artists who delve into the folklore and roots of their respective culture’s music to tell the story of their origins, preserving and affirming cultural identities and legacies.
