Nile Project Comes to Europe

For those who have been following Afropop for the past few years, it’s likely you’ve heard of and been enamored with the Nile Project. In brief, the project’s intent is to foster cultural exchange and bring a positive change to the Nile River Basin and the people who are a part of its life. Curators Mina Girgis and Danny Mekonnen bring together musicians from the 11 Nile Basin countries to blend the musical traditions and instruments of their homelands into socially and environmentally conscious music that is a voice for the greater Nile community as a whole. The collective creates their music to promote awareness of the environmental issues plaguing the river and the political machinations that are hindering its effective, equitable and sustainable management.

The lineup has changed over the years, through producing two albums (Aswan and Jinja) and touring Africa and North America, but the passionate heart and musical excellence has not faded. In fact, with an often-shifting roster, the group is constantly revitalized and shaped into something new, ensuring a sustained feeling of freshness and creativity.

We’ve got good news for our friends in Europe who haven’t yet had the opportunity to see this supergroup on stage: The Nile Project is coming to you! Their debut European tour begins June 15 in Brussels, Belgium, and continues on in England soon after. If you’re in or around these two countries this coming week, we highly recommend you go hear their mighty sound and get involved with their project.
