This special evening will feature Grammy Award nominee and ngoni (African lute) virtuoso Bassekou Kouyate with his group Ngoni Ba from Mali in concert, featuring singer Ami Sacko, plus special guest performances including the sensational Mamadou Kelly from northern Mali accompanied by sidemen to the immortal Ali Farka Toure. Sudanese singing star Omer Ehsas will grace the stage. Samba Mapangala will bring his inimitable singing style. It’s a showcase of 25 years of Afropop with thrilling music, camaraderie, delicious wines and lite fare served at the elegant City Winery, and a lot of fun! We’ll take great pleasure in inducting Bassekou into the Afropop Hall of Fame as he joins the ranks of Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangare, Baaba Maal, the Mahotella Queens and other luminaries.
We guarantee a Gala experience you’ll never forget! And you’ll have an opportunity to support our ongoing, stellar research and production for our award-winning radio program and web site. Hope to see you there!
From its start in 1988, hosted by broadcast personality Georges Collinet from Cameroon, the program coined a new term, Afropop, and gave Americans their first exposure to now-legendary artists: Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Salif Keita, Hakim, Khaled, Chico Science, Cesaria Évora, Thomas Mapfumo, Oumou Sangare, and many others.
The ground-breaking series takes listeners and web users to exciting musical destinations—Senegal, Tanzania, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Colombia, Suriname, South Africa, the Dominican Republic, New York City and around the world once a week on your local radio stations and online streaming daily. Afropop is hosted by the one and only Georges Collinet from Cameroon.
Afropop’s web site—afropop.org—launched in 1997, was one of the first websites on African music and one of the first for any public radio program. The award-winning site now offers original audio, the Hip Deep series, video, a rich blog, and the most extensive archive on African music to be found on the web.
