We here at Afropop like to stay current with the baile funk scene. So, we’re totally hyped on the recent mixtape dropped by Pearls Negras on Bolabo Records. Though they are still young, these MC’s are killin’ it.
Though it’s only 21 minutes long, the EP covers a lot of ground. Each track is markedly different, filled with its own personality. Ranging from the hard driving “O Futuro” to the frenetic “Bata Dois,” the record shows a strong hip hop influence. A standout is the teenie bop party anthem “Make it Last,” complete with a catchy pop hook sung in English, championing staying out all night long. Throughout, the production is first rate, combining the classic baile funk sounds with hip hop snares and surprising percussion (a xylophone hook on “Mr. President?) Be sure to check this one out.
