Fela Kuti, the unrivaled champion of Afrobeat, controversial political activist of post-colonial Nigeria, and cultural icon will see another incarnation in the documentary film Finding Fela. Premiering at the 30 edition of the Sundance Film Festival on January 17, the film incorporates interviews of the likes of his son Seun and album cover artist Lemi Ghariokwu, as it seeks to explain both the essence of this prolific musician and the continued allure of his legacy.
Executive producers of the hit broadway musical Fela! have not only brought his story to the silver screen, but brought the Fela Band to perform and enjoy the celebration (check below for complete schedule). Afropop has followed the recent telling of Fela’s story from the Broadway show’s opening in New York to its journey to Lagos. We hope fans share our enthusiasm for this next chronicle of his life and work.
