It’s been a productive few days for Major Lazer. Fresh off their collaboration with Machel Montano— giving their electro-dancehall sound a new soca spin– they have two brand new projects out. The first of those is the sixth volume of their Lazer Strikes Back compilation series. The comp contains remixes and dub versions of many of the songs off the band’s last full length, Free The Universe. The German DJ crew So Shifty contributed four tracks to the mix, and their dub version of “Jah No Partial” is a blissfully horn-filled highlight.
Meanwhile on the BBC Radio programme Diplo and Friends, Major Lazer’s Walshy Fire (also a member of the Miami soundsystem Black Chiney) put together a mix that features some brand new Major Lazer tracks– including a collaboration with Sean Paul (“Come on to Me”) and the previously mentioned Machel Montano team-up. The mix starts off with an autotuned dub version of Busy Signal’s excellent version of Lorde’s “Royals” before launching into over an hour of high-powered electro-heavy bangers. During a short break from the mix hitting listeners like a jackhammer, a movie-trailer-announcer voice exclaims, “Lord have mercy! This is the loudest show in the universe.”
Among the many sources that Walshy Fire weaves into the mix are dancehall powerhouses Fuse ODG and Vybz Kartel, along with some more left-field choices like Eurythmics, Celia Cruz, and A$AP Ferg. The funniest moment of the mix belongs to Prince Zimboo, whose track “Butt Brains” (given the Major Lazer dub treatment) features the immortal lines, “Some girls have big ass, put the brain off jackass” and “Your teeth the color of feet of Bilbo Baggins.” Perhaps too early to say, but that is quite possibly the best burn of 2014.
So whether you are hosting the most banging party in the post-apocalyptic dystopian future (see album cover) or practicing twerking in your living room, Major Lazer will be by your side to assist in your exploits.
